For Our Kids

Story”: Every HQ course will incorporate the concept of “story”, whether through the course structure, content, or as a way to discuss multiple perspectives.  For examples see below.

o  “Action Hero” / Fitness – Perhaps our class mission is, “we need to run for five minutes to escape the erupting volcano to reach the stream, then do burpees across the turtle shells to cross the stream and then spar with the army of orcs by throwing punches in the air and ducking and dodging . . .”

o  “The Creator” / Art – Perhaps, creating a moment in a stop-motion movie where two characters with their own perspectives collide making them have to rethink their own personal story. It could be deep or simple and fun – “Your peanut butter got mixed into my chocolate!” “No - your chocolate got mixed into my Peanut butter!” – “Wait, that’s actually good”. “Yeah, let’s talk.”

o  “The Orator” / Writing – Perhaps, creating a graphic novel with a choose-your-own adventure about a local neighborhood person who runs into an alien monster, feeling scared, he has to save his hood from being taken over by beings that look different than him.

So, whether “story” is creating an experience set forth by a teacher in the form of a “Mission”, discussing stories as perspectives, or students writing their own stories reflecting elements of their own community, every HQ class will incorporate “Story”.
